Directions

Bake the Cake:

  • Prepare the gluten-free chocolate cake according to package directions, adding 1 tablespoon of San-J Tamari to the batter. Bake in a 9×13-inch pan as directed. Let cool completely, then cut or break into 1-inch cubes.

Make the Tamari Caramel Sauce:

  • In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine brown sugar, cream, butter, and San-J Tamari. Stir continuously until the mixture starts to bubble and thicken, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract. Let cool slightly.

Make the Whipped Cream:

  • In a large mixing bowl, beat heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla together with an electric mixer until soft peaks form. Set aside in the refrigerator.

Prepare the Pudding:

  • Make the chocolate pudding according to package instructions using 4 cups milk. Chill until set.

Assemble the Trifle:

  • Place half of the cake cubes into the bottom of a trifle dish (or individual cups).
  • Add half of the chocolate pudding, spreading evenly.
  • Add a layer of whipped cream, then drizzle with Tamari Caramel Sauce.
  • Repeat all layers once more: cake, pudding, whipped cream, and caramel.
  • Top with a final drizzle of caramel and sprinkle with chocolate shavings or sea salt if desired. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving to let the flavors meld.
